Perhaps you are hiring an amateur photographer, roping in a friend to do your photos for you, or you just want to look over the possibilities before you get to the studio. Whatever your situation, here are some suggestions for when you take your engagement pictures. Mostly I've suggested different poses I've seen done, but there are a few techniques I mention, too. The more variety you have in the pictures you send me, the more inspired I'll get in creating your unique invitation.
- Try laughing together
- The girl can snuggle into his shoulder
- Catch him gazing at her while she's looking at flowers
- The piggyback shot is what I used in my own wedding invitations
- Capture a stolen kiss--on the cheek, the forehead, or the traditional--just make sure eyes are closed blissfully
- A bridge makes for wonderful scenery--try looking into the river, almost as if you're pondering its symbolisms for your life ahead
- Sit back to back and turn your heads toward the camera or towards each other
- Look off into the distance together
- Find a reading window and sit toe-to-toe looking at each other or out the window
- Nuzzle noses with your eyes full of innocence and wonder
- Try a silhouette against a nice sunset
- Catch her in the middle of a twirl dancing together
- Try the Tango pose--him holding her while she does a dip
- Catch him whispering in her ear or vice versa
- Capture the essence of two lovers enjoying a stroll
- Lie down on the grass and prop yourselves up on your elbows and look like you're in the middle of an engrossing conversation
- Try sitting on a picnic table, shooting the picture from behind to show his arm around her
- Put your arms around each other and touch your foreheads together and close your eyes like this quiet pose is heavenly
- Focus on her ring against his shoulder as she holds him
- Get a full shot of the both of you pressed against each other, with her knee bent so her leg kicks up playfully
- Put his arms around her from behind, have her look up at him and touch his cheek
- Sit side by side with her head resting on his shoulder
- Sit side by side with her hugging one knee
- Visit a park and get some playful shots swinging or sliding together
- Visit an amusement park and get some playful shots together
- Relive the proposal--either try down on one knee or get a close up of the hands and the diamond ring
- Show him handing her a rose or offering her a chocolate out of a heart-shaped box
- Capture a tickle session
- Enjoy a glass of wine--photograph the clinking of the glasses, and make sure the ring shows
- Have her sit hugging her knees turned sideways in front of him
- Stand with your hands joined loosely and gaze into each other's eyes
- Stand side by side, holding hands, with his head resting on hers
- Capture the elegance of feeding each other grapes
- Take a picture of the two of you playing chess
- Get a tandem bike shot, or her riding on the handlebars, or go canoeing together
- Sit in front of a fireplace holding steaming mugs of hot chocolate
- Take your pictures in the late afternoon while the sunlight is getting softer but not gone yet
- Don't wear patterned clothing--go for simple solids
